On Wednesday 4 November, Merve Nezihe Özer successfully defended her PhD thesis on: “Essays on Drivers and Long-Term Impact of Migration”

Supervisors: Prof. dr. Andries de Grip & Prof. dr. Didier Fouarge

In OECD countries, the number of highly-skilled immigrants between 1990 and 2010 by 130% (Kerr et al., 2016). The number of international students enrolled in higher education between 2008 and 2018 by 39% increased (OECD, 2019). The increasing influx of highly skilled migrants workers and international students is partly the result of migration policy with regard to ‘knowledge workers’ aimed at solving shortages of Qualified personnel on the labour market (OECD, 2018). Mainly because of the strong increase in the number of refugees over the last decade continues Migration is a subject of public debate. One of the key points of the public debate on migrants is the integration of low-skilled immigrants and refugees, since even the second and third generations are lagging behind their native peers, both in terms of their level of education and their success in the labour market (e.g. Algan et al., 2010).
