Title: Career Success of Mothers and Fathers - The Role of Local Public Childcare (joint w/ Katarina Weßling & Dominik Becker)

Abstract: The birth of a child contributes to increasing gender inequalities in parents’ careers, especially in Germany. It is well-known that the availability of public childcare facilitates mothers’ re-entry into the labor market. However, an unanswered question concerns the influence that the local availability of public childcare may take on longer-term career trajectories of both mothers and fathers and to what extent this depends on couples’ division of labor. We use data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) enriched with data on the local availability of public childcare provided by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) and measures parents’ career advancements by monthly and hourly wage gains and the achievement of leadership positions. Cox regression models show that the local availability of public childcare is associated with a reduced average time to achieve career advancements for mothers, whereas fathers’ careers remain largely unaffected. However, in terms of couple-specific division of labor, fathers also tend to benefit more from the local availability of public childcare if they live in a dual-earner household than if they are the primary earner.
