Inequality / Equality of opportunities

  • In this theme, we focus on analysing inequality between groups and (promoting) equal opportunities between individuals, both in education and in the labour market. Societal and economic trends and technological innovations do not affect everyone equally. What are the implications of these trends for inequalities in education and on the labour market? How does the complex interplay of social background, cognitive and non-cognitive skills, capabilities, and health explain these inequalities? And what are the consequences of inequalities early in life for people’s labour market participation and outcomes later in life? In answering these questions, we especially focus on some of the most vulnerable groups in Western societies: marginalized adolescents, NEETs, children from socially disadvantaged families and neighbourhoods, low-skilled workers, older workers, people with a migration background, and people with disabilities.
