Lifelong Learning

  • In this research theme, we analyse the determinants and barriers to lifelong learning activities: formal learning (adult education), non-formal learning and informal learning. The current labour market is characterised by its dynamics. These dynamics result in changes in skill demands and skill supplies. It is therefore not surprising that lifelong learning (LLL) receives great attention in the policy debate (OECD, 2021). LLL has the potential to prevent skills obsolescence in the first place by staying up-to-date while also allowing skill repairment, as well as upskilling and reskilling. In this research theme, we analyse the determinants and barriers of lifelong learning activities: formal learning (adult education), nonformal learning ánd informal learning. We also analyse the effectiveness of interventions to promote lifelong learning activities. Moreover, we relate lifelong learning activities to skill levels and developments and labour market outcomes such as wages, employability and re-employment probabilities.
