Titel: Does the conservative culture in the region matter? A longitudinal analysis of mothers’ child-related career interruptions using German micro-level and context-level data

Abstract: Our study examines whether regional conservative culture shapes mothers’ child-related career interruptions in Germany. Using longitudinal data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (2006–2019) linked to district-level indicators, we analyze the timing of mothers’ return to part-time and/or full-time employment after childbirth. Event-history models incorporate regional labor market conditions, childcare availability, and normative climate in the region measured by long-term conservative voting patterns. Results show that conservative regional cultures delay mothers’ return to full-time employment, while part-time re-entry remains unaffected. Moreover, conservative voting patterns in the region negatively influence the effect of childcare availability on the return to employment. These findings highlight the importance of cultural contexts alongside structural factors in shaping gendered career trajectories.
