Titel: Working Longer for Social Good? How Information on Retirement Income and Timing Shapes Preferences for Socially Responsible Investments in Pension Portfolios
Abstract: Retirement decisions are increasingly influenced not only by financial incentives but also by the social impact of pension investments. We examine how detailed information on expected pension returns, replacement ratios, and potential changes in retirement age affects individuals’ preferences for socially responsible investments (SRIs). Using a stated preference experiment among 1,726 Dutch pension-eligible adults, we find that when lower returns imply working longer, willingness to invest in SRIs declines. This effect is particularly strong for participants with higher risk aversion or lower financial literacy. While SRI characteristics such as environmental versus social focus play a limited role, the framing of retirement trade-offs substantially shapes investment choices. Our findings highlight how labor supply and retirement timing considerations interact with socially responsible investment preferences, offering new evidence on the micro-level behavioral responses that link pension design, work decisions, and social impact objectives.Scheduled seminars
