Primary and Secondary Education

  • A large part of the ROA’s educational research concerns primary and/or secondary education. Within this theme, the ROA investigates, for example, pupil performance, the organisation of the education sector, teacher training and development, and the effects of educational innovations and changes. These analyses provide important insights for practitioners, policymakers and academia alike. Examples include studies into the consequences of COVID-19 for education, projects focused on the teacher shortage, research into early predictors of school success, and research into AI in education.

The ROA has a wealth of expertise in these sectors, drawing on a range of disciplines. Our teams of researchers combine expertise from sociological, educational, psychological and economic backgrounds, enabling a multidisciplinary approach to issues.

Various projects are taking place in and about primary education, both within Education Lab and within the Education, Skills and Educational Transitions research programme, as well as within the Health, Skills and Inequality research programme. Large, long-term projects include the Amsterdam Education Network (ONA) and The Netherlands Cohort Study on Education (NCO).
