    Titel: Subject-Specific Rank and the Educational Tracking of Migrant Students

    Abstract: This paper examines whether relative academic position carries different implications for educational tracking across subjects and student groups. Using linked administrative data on Dutch primary school students, we construct separate mathematics and reading ranks from grade 5 standardized tests and estimate their effects on teacher recommendations and realised secondary-school placement. The empirical strategy exploits variation in rank generated by differences in peer achievement distributions across school cohorts, while controlling flexibly for absolute achievement and school-cohort fixed effects. The estimated rank effects differ sharply across subjects and student groups. Mathematics rank has a similar effect on pre-university recommendations for native and non-Western migrant students, whereas the effect of reading rank is substantially smaller for non-Western migrant students. A 10-percentile increase in reading rank raises the probability of receiving a pre-university recommendation by 0.47 percentage points less for non-Western migrant students than for native students, a reduction of about 27 percent relative to the native-student effect. The same asymmetry is visible in realised pre-university placement, is stronger among first-generation migrants, and is more pronounced when rank is measured earlier in primary school. More broadly, the findings show that composite rank measures can conceal important heterogeneity across subjects and student groups in how relative academic position affects educational tracking decisions.
